What is Twitter?

Twitter is a combination of social networking and micro-blogging that enables its users to send and read other users’ updates known as tweets. Users of Twitter sign up to receive people’s tweets in an action know as following.

Tweets are limited to 140 characters in length. Twitter has been developed so that tweets can be made either via the user’s profile online, via email, mobile platforms or SMS.

Twitter has been propelled into the public spotlight with many famous celebrities such as Stephen Fry adopting the technology to let interested users follow their lives.
